[sannol. av t. dial. schmelle, n., diminutivform av schmelg(e), schmelhen, f., flicka, sannol. sidoform till t. schmiele (mht. smelche, smēle, fht. smelohe), benämning på olika smalbladiga gräsarter, (lång o.) slank person, till schmal, smal (se SMAL, adj.)]
